Monks Cowl Golf Resort
Monks Cowl Golf Resort is situated in the Central Drakensberg approximately four hours from Johannesburg and two and a half hours from Durban, in the magnificent Champagne Valley. The Golf Resort is next door to Champagne Sports and Racket and adjoining the popular Cathkin Estate Development.
Situated on the golf course we have six spacious, freestanding units. We offer a honeymoon suite with a wooden deck, four-poster bed, log fire and spa bath. Our other standard units sleep from two to six people (four beds upstairs) All units have a full bathroom downstairs.
Tea and coffee making facilities are available in all the units. A short walk through our gardens takes you to our a’la Carte restaurant where breakfasts are served anytime between eight and eleven am. During winter a log fire adds to the coziness of our restaurant and pub. In addition to our 60-seater restaurant we have a function room, which seats 80 – 100 guests. This venue has its own bar and ablutions as well as sound system and big-screen projector and is ideal for weddings, parties and conferences.
We offer resident guests free use of our swimming pool and tennis courts, plus restaurant and pub facilities in a casual, homely environment. The golf course has a couple of dams and a river with a small waterfall plus swing bridge for those a little more adventurous! For those golfers still at “caddy” status a pleasant walk around the course may be enjoyed. Alternatively motorised golf cars are available. The best walks and hiking trails in the foothills of the Drakensberg are only a ten-minute drive from here.
Facilities within a 15 kilometer radius include horse riding, paintball, trout fishing, river rafting, quad biking and bowling greens as well as a bird of prey display center and the world renowned Drakensburg Boys Choir.

- Enjoy a leisurely and scenic drive – or horse-ride – through Spioenkop Dam and Nature reserve and view a variety of game, including rhino and giraffe.
- Look back at a bygone era and take a trip to the well-known Spioenkop Battlefields. Take a self-guided trail and view the graves, monuments and trenches or book a guide.
- Visit the Eskom Hydro Electric Scheme at Jagersrust in the Northern Berg. Bookings to be made in advance.
- Monks Cowl Parks Board offers a range of hikes varying in length and difficulty through our beautiful mountains.Take a guided hike from Cathedral with visits to Bushman painting sites. Guides are available on a first come first serve basis and dependent on guides being available. Advance bookings can be made.
- Take a scenic drive up Mike’s Pass at Cathedral Peak. Weather permitting of course.
- Well worth a visit, the small Winterton Museum situated in Church Street. You will find fascinating displays of fauna & flora of the Berg, as well as exhibits on the history of the area, bushman paintings, etc.

Directions from Durban
- Take the N3 North to the Estcourt North, Giant’s Castle off ramp
- Turn left to Loskop
- Travel approximately 35km through Loskop and past Kwazulu Shoe Factory until you reach the crossroads
- Take a left turn to “Central Drakensberg R600″
- Travel for another 13km, pass The Nest hotel on your right, Champagne Sports Resort on your left a little further on.
- As you pass this resort, the road dips into a valley over a low level crossing, the road bends up to the left. The golf course is on your left.
- About 700 m up the hill you will pass Hill Billy’s Farm on your right.
- The next left turn (sign board showing “Monks Cowl Golf Resort, Champagne Valley Resort”) will take you to Monks Cowl Golf Resort.
- It will take approximately 3 ½ to 4 hours to reach us.
Directions from Johannesburg
- Take the N3 to Harrismith
- Take the N5 towards Bethlehem for 4km
- Turn left at “Phuthaditjhaba/Bergville” signboard and follow road for 8km
- Turn left at the R74 Bergville/Oliviershoek
- Follow route down the pass, past Bergville to Winterton
- On entering Winterton, over the Little Tugela Bridge, there is a turning to your right (opposite Engen garage) going over the railway line – sign showing Central Drakensberg R600
- Cross the Little Tugela again thenTravel 12km until you reach a crossroads.
- Cross straight over.
